Pizon, EJ, and Timid are The Fam

April 1, 2009

L to R: Timid, Pizon, and EJ

In a climate where everyone is out to prove superiority for his or her region, The Fam is on a mission to shatter geographical boundaries and establish dominance on a higher level. Conceived over half a decade ago as a loose collective, the now tightly knit trio prepares to unleash its long-awaited album Family Business, which aims to set a new standard for the group record in Hip Hop. While most rap groups are limited either by members who share the same backgrounds and experiences and are thus often indistinguishable from one another, or by performers lacking in chemistry whose forced collaborations often fall flat, The Fam faces neither of these problems. Pizon is a native of Queens, New York, who overcame tragedy in his personal life by using music as his outlet, emerging with a pedigree from the legendary Rawkus Records. EJ, born and raised in Galveston, Texas, draws influence from the classics and seamlessly combines east coast lyricism with dirty south flavor. Timid has lived throughout the United States and abroad, giving him a global perspective whose laid back demeanor is best exemplified by his calling Hawaii home. Though they have established themselves individually, the three members of The Fam have been closely associated for years, making this group effort a natural step in their progression. They recorded most of the album in the same studio together, which in itself is a statement in today’s copy-and-paste Pro Tools age. The lead single “Dreams Come True” achieved success on airwaves and in clubs, receiving spins from the biggest Hip Hop station in Washington, DC down to college and Internet radio, and being featured on many DJs’ playlists, mixtapes, and podcasts. Recently, “Get Off My Ass” featuring Kon Artis of D12 (who also produced the track under his Mr. Porter alias, by which he is known for composing hits such as 50 Cent’s “P.I.M.P.” and G-Unit’s “Stunt 101″) premiered on the radio and Vlad TV, where it enjoyed over 30,000 plays in its first ten days. Other producers on the album include Domingo (Eminem, Fat Joe, Big Pun, KRS-One, Rakim) and Kno of the CunninLynguists (Lil Scrappy, Masta Ace, Jay-Z’s White Albulum).

Aside from traditional promotional methods, The Fam employs the newest technological advances to stay ahead of the competition. To keep close personal contact with their fans, The Fam makes use of a voicemail/update service provided by SayNow, who has given them their own dedicated phone number and classified them as Stars alongside the likes of Soulja Boy, The Jonas Brothers, and TI. The pre-album mixtape Family Affair was distributed online for free, and contained voice messages left by the fans who called into this line. The Fam runs a 24/7 streaming video channel called FamTV, which was verified by the Mogulus network and is used to broadcast live performances, behind the scenes clips, music videos, and extras. An on-demand feature and chat room — utilized to host live chats with members of The Fam — are also included. The Fam’s official street team was organized from a central networking hub and attracted members throughout the world who volunteered to help spread the word in exchange for music industry experience and merchandise. Between the three members and the group itself, The Fam has over 100,000 collective friends on MySpace who are kept up to date with bulletins and status updates. Pizon also maintains a blog site on which he posts exclusive content, and Timid runs the Hip Hop e-zine OneTwoOneTwo.com.

Members of The Fam have performed at the New York City Marathon, which is the largest of its kind in the world, every year since 2006. They’ve done shows throughout the United States and beyond, even taking the stage at the New Year’s Nation party in Los Angeles that saw Travis Barker and DJ AM reuniting for the first time since their near fatal plane crash. Pizon hosted a Monty-nominated cable television show in the DC area, and his volunteer work includes starting the charity Hip Hop Is Not the Enemy which raises money to fight domestic violence. EJ set up a relief fund to aid victims of Hurricane Ike in his home city, and Timid is an advocate for alternative medicine and teaches Tai chi. The Fam has also been involved with voter outreach, appearing at political rallies and protests.

Though this may seem like an impossibly difficult grind, to The Fam it’s just Family Business. With the album now on the horizon, it’s become evident that there is no beating The Fam. One’s best hope is to try to join them.

FamTV Becomes Mogulus Verified Channel

February 23, 2009

We’re proud to announce that FamTV has officially become a Mogulus verified channel.  FamTV is the 24/7 online video network launched by The Fam’s Pizon, Timid, and EJ that broadcasts footage from the group’s events, music videos, behind the scenes coverage, and more.  It also contains an on-demand service that allows viewers to access featured content at their convenience.  In addition, the FamTV chat room has been used to host weekly and impromptu chats between fans and members of the group.  FamTV will begin airing live broadcasts in the near future.

As a Mogulus verified channel, FamTV is now able to stream to unlimited concurrent viewers.  It is also now listed in the Mogulus Channel Guide and eligible for promotion throughout the Mogulus Network.  This means that FamTV will be carried to more viewers and will enjoy more visibility than ever before.

To watch FamTV anytime, go to www.mogulus.com/famtv.  FamTV can also be accessed via this site, or The Fam’s MySpace pages.

The end of an era

November 11, 2008

I Am Hip Hop t-shirt

The last of the I Am Hip Hop t-shirts was moved at the NYC Marathon last Sunday.  No new shipments are coming in, so if you were able to get your hands on one over the past few years, relish owning a piece of history… or sell it on Ebay.  Don’t forget that the new Fam t-shirts currently being offered also guarantee you a free copy of the Family Business album before its release.  Just had to throw that out there.  I’m waiting for video from the Marathon show to surface, but until then here are some reflections:

Show date: November 2, 2008
@ 115th Street and 5th Avenue
New York, NY

-The show (which took place two days before the election) was an official Obama campaign event and he was even purported to make a surprise appearance at one point, but the logistics would have made that impossible.  The space was too open, and as Timid pointed out, if he stepped on stage during the show the marathon itself would have been sabotaged because all the runners would stop.  Still, the support was strong and I got to wear my “That One ’08″ button that was given to me as a gift for helping the campaign in Virginia.  I brought my Shepard Fairey “Hope” poster that I also received for my efforts, but due to time constraints didn’t get to showcase it during the set.

-My laminated “2008 ING NYC Marathon” pass allowed me to bypass police barriers and park on a street that was blocked off to the public.  Being a performer has its perks.

-Since the show was outside along the marathon route, there was a bus parked on 115th Street that acted as a “backstage” area for the artists.  Aside from serving bagels, its primary functions were providing temporary relief from the cold and housing all the clashing egos.  Seriously, the bus was a good look.  We shot some footage on the bus with Greg Williams (of Switch/DeBarge fame) — who loves pointing out his writer credit on Rich Boy’s “Throw Some D’s” — for Willie Spade’s video blog.  Spade told the story of how he and I first crossed paths in the 1990s before either of us was involved with Hip Hop.  I’m looking forward to seeing it.

-I’m going to go ahead and say it:  Willie Spade was the MVP of the 2008 Marathon show.  He had songs done with seemingly every artist that performed which ensured stage time on all their sets.  Traveling from Alabama for the show, he made the most of his (and everyone else’s) time.

-While Team Blackout may have a long way to go before reaching Run DMC status, it was an honor to share the stage with the son of one of Hip Hop’s founding fathers, and the nephew of another.  Despite early tension resulting from a misinterpreted remark about JoJo’s Sidekick, everything settled down and he and I later bopped our heads and rapped along to a BIG song together.  Due to his age, I was surprised he knew the words to “Warning” so well.  Oh, and they’re filming the new season of Run’s House as we speak.

-Persia of VH1 infamy showed up in a tutu and followed her one song with the monosyllabic proclamation:  “Cold!”  Well, yeah.  Other upcoming and newly signed major label artists also took the stage.

-We got to do the first live rendition of “Mr. Carter” while Timid donned a t-shirt that said “Mr. Jaylon Carter” on it.  During the set, I threw some of the extra shirts into the crowd along with hats, CDs, and whatever else was in the bag.  There are now people walking around New York City with Timid’s given name on their clothes.  We also handed out CD copies of the “Dreams Come True” single after the performance.

That marked the third year in a row that I was part of the ONLY live music show at the biggest marathon in the world.  Shout outs to Scott @ SBS, Akademy, Bonz, Living Legends, and everyone else who made history with us.

“Dreams Come True” tops The Track Meet

October 22, 2008

RapReviews.com writer Nervous has created a “Hot or Not”-like site for music, where users can listen to song samples and anonymously rate what they hear on a scale of 1 to 10.  In his words:

Like a lot of you, I have spent a considerable amount of time on sites like MySpace and SoundClick checking out other people’s music and trying to get them to check mine out too.

One day, I had a brainstorm: wouldn’t it be nice to have a place where you did not have to worry about heavy graphics and big files loading and could just concentrate on the tracks? No marketing tricks, just go from track to track and concentrate on the music?

The result of this idea is The Track Meet, to which we happily contributed “Dreams Come True” for rating purposes.  After all, who knows more about what’s really hot than the listeners themselves?

The listeners have spoken, and ”Dreams Come True” is solidly holding down the #1 spot in the Top 50, currently averaging nearly two points above the next highest rated track.  Though the lead single from the upcoming Family Business album has appeared on record charts and received industry shine, this is something of a “People’s Choice” type distinction coming directly from the listening public.  So for that, we thank you.

And don’t forget to vote yourself:  when it comes to the Track Meet, you don’t have to wait another two weeks for your voice to be heard!
